What is Dementia?
Dementia is not a specific disease, but rather a general term for loss of cognitive functioning - thinking, remembering, and reasoning. Dementia is a very common condition with more than three million cases diagnosed each year in the US. While there is no cure, there are treatment options that can help slow down the progression.
Dementia is most likely to be associated with memory loss. However, some other signs and symptoms that may indicate your loved one has dementia. These include:
memory loss, poor judgment, and/or confusion
changes in the ability to read, write, and/or speak
wandering or getting lost in familiar locations
having trouble handling financials
taking more time to complete normal day-to-day activities
It is important to be on the lookout for these signs and symptoms because dementia is a progressive disease it can gradually progress or move rather quickly it is different in each person. If your loved one begins to show any of these signs and symptoms, do not ignore them.
